The Department of Anthropology at San Diego State University invites applications for a postdoctoral research fellow position in primatology. The position is part of a U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) funded, interdisciplinary project, integrating anthropology and statistics, to advance knowledge and understanding of how primates adapt to risks and rewards in anthropogenic landscapes. The overall project goals are to: 1) analyze how a human-induced landscape of fear affects primate decision-making about when, where, and with whom to forage and move, 2) broaden our understanding of the demographic, cultural, and emotional factors underlying people’s propensity to interact with primates, and 3) generate novel statistical methodology for holistic, quantitative inference about decision-making that will be broadly applicable to the Social, Behavioral, and Economic sciences. The specific system that we are investigating is the human-macaque interface on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.

FUNCTION OF THE UNIT
SDSU is leading a new project funded by a UC Climate Action grant in support of a collaborative partnership to advance community and ecosystem resilience to climate change through Indigenous stewardship. Our project, the Collaborative of Native Nations for Climate Transformation and Stewardship (CNNCTS) brings together four universities, six Tribal partners, and the Climate Science Alliance’s Tribal Working Group, a network of representatives from 20+ Tribal governments and organizations in southern California to facilitate a paradigm shift in how climate action is visioned, led, and implemented. Our collaborative model embodies equal valuation of Indigenous and academic knowledge, advances Indigenous management practices and stewardship, and innovates shared learning opportunities for university students and community members.

The Society, Equity, Stigma, and Health Lab (SESH Lab), directed by Dr. Arjan van der Star, conducts research focused on multilevel, societal systemic mechanisms driving adverse mental health outcomes among sexual and gender minorities, using a wide range of (social) epidemiological methods. The Body Image, Sexuality, and Health Lab (BISH Lab), directed by Dr. Aaron Blashill, conducts research focused on sexual orientation and gender identity-based disparities in mental health, physical health, and health behaviors. This position will be primarily involved in two NIH-funded research projects: 1) an epidemiological data harmonization study on the socioecology of sexual minority stigma and sexual minority mental health and 2) an intervention study focusing on suicide prevention among sexual and gender minority youth. Child Welfare Development Services (CWDS) provides workforce development, organizational support, technical assistance, and capacity building for the public child welfare staff of Southern California counties. These services include coaching, simulation, classroom training, eLearning, and evaluation services. Workforce development services consist of development opportunities for new social workers, the existing workforce, supervisors, managers, and executive-level leadership as well as community partners and multidisciplinary partners working closely with child welfare agencies.
