It promotes college access and completion for underserved students through excellence and innovation in education. SDSU Upward Bound/HCOP are educational opportunity programs funded by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to assist eligible high school students to pursue and complete postsecondary programs of education. The Counselor for Upward Bound/HCOP is responsible for conducting weekly advising sessions with students and collaborating in the planning and implementation of the recruitment process and engagement activities. The Counselor will also help in the planning and implementation of monthly Saturday Sessions, assist the Director of Summer Programs with the coaching of Counselor Interns with student advising, student recruitment, and mentoring. Under the supervision of the PIs and working in close cooperation with other study investigators and community partners, the Research Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating community-engaged research addressing inequities in mental health, sexual/reproductive health, HIV, and related health disparities among asylum-seeking women at the Mexico-U.S. border. Specifically, this position will support two Tijuana-based studies being conducted in collaboration with El Colegio de la Frontera Norte, Al Otro Lado, and the Mexico-U.S. Border Health Commission: 1) an NIMH-funded study to adapt and pilot-test a novel mental health prevention intervention for migrant mothers with young children, and 2) a Center for AIDS Research (CFAR)-funded study evaluating the social-structural ‘risk environment’ for syndemic sexual health and HIV, STI and TB inequities among asylum-seeking women in Tijuana.

The Society, Equity, Stigma, and Health Lab (SESH Lab), directed by Dr. Arjan van der Star, conducts research focused on multilevel, societal systemic mechanisms driving adverse mental health outcomes among sexual and gender minorities, using a wide range of (social) epidemiological methods. The Body Image, Sexuality, and Health Lab (BISH Lab), directed by Dr. Aaron Blashill, conducts research focused on sexual orientation and gender identity-based disparities in mental health, physical health, and health behaviors. The Cancer Disparities and Cancer Communication Lab is directed by Dr. Kristen Wells. Research in this lab focuses on the development and evaluation of patient navigation, community health worker, and health communication interventions.
Drs. Van der Star, Blashill, and Wells received funds from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to conduct and facilitate epidemiological research and research on suicide prevention in gender and sexual minority youth and young adults.
This position will be primarily involved in two NIH-funded research projects: 1) an epidemiological data harmonization study on the socioecology of sexual minority stigma and sexual minority mental health and 2) an intervention study focusing on suicide prevention among sexual and gender minority youth. This is a two-year position, with opportunities for extension pending availability of funding. Start date is summer 2023. The Postdoctoral Scholar will interact with multidisciplinary research labs focused on LGBTQ+ health, clinical psychology, health behavior, social and psychiatric epidemiology, and intervention development.

Child Welfare Development Services (CWDS) provides workforce development, organizational support, technical assistance and capacity building for the public child welfare staff of Southern California counties. These services include coaching, simulation, classroom training, eLearning and evaluation services. Workforce development services consist of development opportunities for new social workers, the existing workforce, supervisors, managers and executive level leadership as well as community partners and multi-disciplinary partners working closely with child welfare agencies.
FUNCTION OF THE UNIT
SDSU Division of Research and Innovation is launching a new EPA-funded Center for Community Energy and Environmental Justice (CCEEJ). The purpose of CCEEJ is to empower communities in EPA’s Region 9 by providing critical services and technical assistance to qualified community organizations. These services will expand participants’ capacity to meet community-defined priorities and participate meaningfully in decision-making processes, focusing specifically on underserved, rural, remote, tribal, and indigenous communities. Building capacity in, providing support for, and collaborating with communities often most vulnerable and affected by environmental challenges is central to advancing
environmental and energy justice. CCEEJ's mission is to leverage and strengthen community assets by creating an accessible in-person and virtual community that builds capacity and provides technical assistance in energy and environmental justice centered around four unifying objectives:
1) Outreach and partnership building,
2) Development of resources,
3) Transfer of knowledge and building community capacity,
4) Evaluation, adaptation, and innovation.
Using a hub and spoke model, CCEEJ will create a nexus of centralized expertise and coordination for each critical service for EPA Region 9, which connects eligible organizations with established partners in each state/territory to coordinate, deliver, and monitor uptake of key services while tracking the outcomes and outputs from the communities we serve.

This is an NIH-funded postdoctoral position to study structure and mechanism of transfer-RNA modification enzymes that constitute a new class of candidate antibacterial drug targets. The laboratory is part of a long-standing multi-institutional consortium focused on studying the biosynthesis and functions of the hypermodified nucleotides of transfer-RNA and understand their roles in translation.
The current project aims to elucidate the mechanistic and structural basis for the biosynthesis of a universally conserved hypermodified nucleotide of the anti-codon stem-loop of tRNA using a multi-disciplinary approach comprising X-ray crystallography, cryoEM, SAXS, NMR spectroscopy, and biochemical methods.
The candidate will focus on structural elucidation using cryoEM and X-ray crystallography of multiple protein and protein-nucleic acid complexes and interface with the PI and team of collaborators on functional and mechanistic interpretation of results toward development of this critical metabolic pathway as an antibacterial target.
