    The Risk Manager is responsible for the leadership, innovation, governance, and management necessary to identify, evaluate, mitigate, and monitor operational and strategic risk. Develops Risk Management tools, practices, and policies to analyze and report enterprise risks, and to manage risks according to an enterprise risk management framework. Ensures the organization's risk management policies and strategies are in compliance with applicable regulations, standards, and strategic imperatives of the organization.


    Works in coordination with various SDSURF departments along with campus, Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) and Human Resources, as well as other University groups to identify, manage, and monitor risk. Leads the process of identifying, measuring and managing insurable risks, developing reports and plans, and analyzing problems and defining and/or overseeing the implementation of the risk solutions and controls that help optimize operations.

    Oversees the purchase of specialty insurance programs and coordinating coverage for the SDSURF programs in which SDSURF participates. Mitigates SDSURF’s exposure to risk by formulating, developing, and coordinating all claims-related activities, as well as resolving bona fide claims at the least possible cost through various risk transfer and control techniques. Directs the program to ensure the proper and efficient handling of claims, gathering data on claims for both record keeping and loss forecasting purposes, and monitoring the financial value of claims in coordination with the Third Party Administrator (TPA). Responsible for post loss reduction techniques including subrogation. Prepares loss analyses and budgets, identifying exposures, recommending solutions, implementing approved programs, promoting loss prevention, updating and monitoring compliance with insurance procedures and managing risk management communications.

    Leads SDSURF’s contingency planning/business continuity efforts regardless of the type of potential disruption. Establishes a strategy, framework and methodology for successful execution of business resiliency plans.



    • Procure, maintain, manage and renew all insurance policies
    • Collect and prepare information for annual report and renewal meeting
    • Serve as primary liaison for insurance brokers
    • Manage claims for property loss
    • Maintain “subject matter” knowledge and expertise for all policies including coverage and deductibles
    • Identify and recommend new policies including coverage and deductibles
    • Chair a “Risk Committee” at SDSURF
    • Identify and manage areas of risk and need for additional or new types of coverage
    • Oversee the foreign travel insurance program
    • Coordinate all notifications of loss to insurance carriers
    • Oversee reimbursement process with insurance carriers to ensure payment
    • Provide advice and inputs on legal matters as related to risk issues
    • Facilitate the reconciliation of claims, replacement costs, bills and deductibles
    • Maintain and manage risk related to DIVE insurance program
    • Oversee business continuity planning
    • Serve as liaison with and disseminate information from AORMA and CSURMA
    • Assist with risk review at the “point of award” stage of the grant process
    • Review campus and community programs for risk and recommend and communicate risk mitigation strategies
    • Process requests for certificates of insurance and additional insured language




    Minimum Qualifications 

    • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university. OR Additional experience may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis
    • Eight years of progressively responsible professional experience; two of which are in a risk managment capacity.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master's or higher degree and/or related experience in an educational setting are preferred.
    • Associate in Risk Management (ARM) designation
    • Previous experience working in a university or non-profit organization
