    This position is open until filled. 

     

    The Counselor Intern for Upward Bound is responsible for conducting weekly advising sessions, assisting in planning and implementation of Saturday Sessions, and student recruitment. In this capacity the Counselor Intern helps students attain their achievement, motivational and academic goals.

     

     

     

    Responsibilities

    Participant Recruitment (25%)

    • Recruit, screen applications for appropriate documents and recruitment eligibility using established program protocols and criteria.
    • Conduct intake interviews, rate candidates and recommend the selection of program participants to the Executive Director.
    • Help plan, implement and co-facilitate new student/parent orientations.
    • Assist in the development and facilitation of the academic enrichment component.
    • In cooperation with the Director, the Executive Director of PCI and the Data Base Management Specialist review the measures each semester used to meet UB program objectives and PCI's strategic objectives.
    • Under the supervision of the Director and the Executive Director of PCI participate constructively in the ongoing development of PCI as a strategic-thinking, strategic-planning organization.

    Academic Advising (30%)

    • Provide advising services to participants at school sites, and at home if appropriate. These services include, but are not limited to personal problem solving, academic advisement, building positive peer support, enhancing communication skills, career planning, academic skill building, study skills techniques and motivational counseling.
    • Conduct needs assessment and develop Individual Learning Plans (ILP’s)
    • Advise students and their parents o college admissions and financial with emphasis on senior participants during each fall semester. 

    Summer Residential Program (10%)

    • Recruit and recommend students to participate in the Six-Week Summer Academy; collect additional documentation as required by ACA, federal and programmatic policies.
    • Assist in the development of the cultural enrichment component.

    Documentation (20%)

    • Document all student contacts and services: service contacts, student case notes, Individual Learning Plans, academic assessments/goals, senior tracking information, attendance rosters and the alumni tracking forms (student and registrar).
    • Submit documentation to the Program Director and/or Administrative Assistant in a timely fashion, for recording and filing in student database and participant files.
    • Assist in the collection and compilation of data for the annual federal report.

    Program Assistance (10%)

    • Attend Upward Bound weekly staff meetings and other Upward Bound/Pre-College Institute Events.
    • Posting resources on social media sites.
    • Attend professional-training meetings and pass tests of knowledge on the foundational documents for Upward Bound.Meet deadlines for the submission of self-evaluation documents to incumbent’s immediate supervisor twice a year at the six-month and annual anniversary date.

    Follow-Up and Other (5%)

    • Conduct timely/regular student follow-up contacts at school site(s).
    • Develop professional workshop/seminars to present at TRIO conferences, where appropriate.
    • Set regular one-on-one supervision meeting with Director, SRP
    • Other duties as assigned to ensure program service delivery.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications

    • One year of previous childcare or mentoring experience.
    • Valid Driver’s License.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Education in childhood education/development.
    • Experience in advising/mentoring high school students.
    • Bilingual (in a second language represented in San Diego County).
    • Experience coordinating events for groups.
    • Experience with TRiO or similar outreach programs.

    A background check (including a criminal records check) and Live Scan must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with SDSU Research Foundation.
