Part-Time ESL Teacher Trainer (Pool)

The College of Extended Studies, American Language Institute (ALI) provides English language training to international students, many of whom are preparing to matriculate to American universities, including SDSU, and TEFL/TESL training to individuals wanting to enter the EFL/ESL teaching field. The ALI currently serves approximately 1500 students per year.


Teacher Trainers must be in the pool in order to be offered classes. Being assigned to the pool does not guarantee that you will receive an assignment. Please apply if you would like to be considered for the pool.  


Responsible for performing a combination of college-level classroom instruction and program administrative duties. Must be able to teach a variety of skills and subjects to a variety of English proficiency levels; demonstrate teaching excellence, knowledge of subject matter, and coordination skills; contribute to curriculum and program improvement as well as problem solving within the Institute.

Classroom and Instruction Related (95%)

  • Prepares and presents course content in keeping with the course title.
  • Maintains a degree of quality instruction which will ensure a beneficial learning experience for students.
  • Keeps accurate records of student attendance and submits these as scheduled.
  • Keeps accurate records of student progress.
  • Develops curriculum as needed, especially in new content areas.
  • Uses audiovisual aids and other materials to supplement presentations.
  • Evaluates teachers in training and provides feedback as necessary
  • Acts as mentor to assigned teachers in training

Non Instruction Related Support (5%)

  • Attends certificate ceremonies.
  • Proctors exams.


Minimum Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of experience teaching in a university.
  • Foreign language proficiency and period of residence abroad preferred.                                                                   

Minimum Education

  • Master’s degree, in TESL, Applied Linguistics or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Foreign language proficiency and period of residence abroad preferred.
  • Teacher training experience preferred.
