The mission of the Exceptional Family Resource Center (EFRC) is to provide support, information and education for families of children with disabilities and the professionals who assist these families. By offering emotional support and factual information, the Center enables families to help their children reach their fullest potential.
Decreasing Disparities in Care in Through Outreach, Education and Linkage
This project is a collaborative project between the San Diego Regional Center, Exceptional Family Resource Center, San Diego State University, and University of California San Diego. It is designed to decrease disparities in service utilization among the Latino(a) population of San Diego and Imperial Counties, specifically in the 11-16 year old age group. The project involves Promotoras, or peer-to-peer parent/caregiver educators, who will deliver a manualized intervention to families of current SDRC clients (ages 11-16) who are not accessing available services. Topics covered with parents will include knowledge about developmental disabilities, advocacy in school and other service systems, building social support, and managing stress. The use of Promotoras is a unique service model because they bring their own experiences, successes, and challenges as a parent or primary caregiver of individuals with disabilities to their work with other parents. Promotoras will deliver the intervention in individual home visits across a 4 month period, on an approximately weekly basis.
Under direct supervision of the Program Manager, the Family Support Liaison/Research Assistant I is responsible for providing Bilingual (Spanish/English) support, advocacy, information, resources, outreach, referral services and opportunities available to parents/caregivers of children with special needs and disabilities and to the professionals who assist these families. The goal of this service is to lessen the parents feelings of isolation to care for a special needs child and help lessen the stress and confusion by empowering parents to be aware of appropriate services and entitlements available for their children and to gain skills and information to assist them in effectively parenting their special needs child. This position is also responsible for preforming data collection and data entry of client records in accordance with EFRC policies and procedures.
PLEASE NOTE: Hours per week may vary from 5-20 depending on the needs of the project. Please also be aware this position will primarily take place in SOUTH BAY.
The Family Support Liaison/Research Assistant I is responsible for but not limited to:
Resource Information & Support
Provides navigation of support services available through the San Diego Regional Center. Provides easy access to a variety of resources such as referrals to community programs, support groups, community agencies and services for families with children with disabilities; responds to phone calls, email messages and in person visits. Partner with the parent/caregiver to assist with system navigation; identify key agencies to access programs and services for the benefit of the parents and child; assist parents to become informed decision makers and advocates for their child. Empowers and encourages parents in accessing services such as schools, hospitals, child welfare, special education, mental health agencies, entitlements, legal and transition services; introduce parents to social media sites, websites and online resources. Responds to inquiries from the public requesting information on available services in the field of disability related services; serves as a resource to staff members for health-related information. Serves as a representative for the Exceptional Family Resource Center by attending community outreach events and activities; develops positive relationships with members of the community and community disability providers.
Data Entry & Clerical Support
Responsible for completing data entry, collecting information on records and preparing reports; collects demographic information on families and maintains and updates client record database in accordance with EFRC policies and procedures. Collects and disseminates materials pertaining to services available to families; makes copies and packets of materials as needed.
Other Duties and Responsibilities as Assigned
Attends staff meetings and local and statewide training classes.
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Experience as a parent or primary care taker of a child with special needs obtaining mental health, educational or related services or entitlements for a special needs child
• Bilingual in both English and Spanish
• Bachelor’s degree in social work, public health or related field
• Experience in home visitation
