    This study is investigating how residents in apartment housing are affected by their neighbors’ tobacco smoke, electronic cigarette vapor, or marijuana (TEM) smoke. The purpose of this position is to work collaboratively with community-based Research Assistants, the Project Coordinator, and Study Investigators to inform community residents about the study; recruit potential participants; collect survey, environmental, and biological data from participants; and inform participants and community residents about the results of the study.


    *Please note that due to the potential for the contamination of study samples, the incumbent must be a nonsmoker and nonuser of tobacco, electronic cigarettes, and marijuana, and must reside with nonsmokers/nonusers.*




    The Research Assistant is responsible for but not limited to:

    • Public Outreach: Conduct a variety of outreach activities with other project research assistants to identify potential study participants. Outreach activities may include distribution of project fliers, interaction with managers and/or residents of apartment complexes, and development of social media.
    • Eligibility Determination: Administer a standardized survey instrument, convey eligibility to potential participants, and set up appointments for home visits.
    • Obtain Informed Consent: Review important points of the consent forms with potential participants, answer questions about the study, and obtain signed consent to participate.
    • Collect Survey Data: Administer standardized survey to collect data regarding use of tobacco, electronic cigarettes, and marijuana in participants’ households and apartment complexes and their experiences with smoke or vapors from tobacco, electronic cigarettes, or marijuana coming into their homes from outside.
    • Collect Environmental and Biological Data: Following standard protocols, collect urine and hand wipe samples from the adult participants and environmental air and dust samples from their homes.



    • Completion of sufficient lower division coursework to successfully perform the required duties of the position OR 
    • Equivalent of one year related experience
    • Ability to quickly learn and apply elementary research methods and procedures; ability to follow oral and written directions



    • Undergraduate degree in public health or related field 
    • Ability to speak and write in Spanish or Somali
    • CITI Human Subjects Research Certificate
    • Experience working with community groups
    • Experience in data collection/management


    A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with SDSU Research Foundation
