    This is an academic appointment made by SDSU.  The position is an overtime exempt classification intended to cover the employee with a doctoral degree or equivalent who is employed for a defined period of mentored advanced training to enhance professional skills and research independence in the fellow’s academic discipline. This position is not intended to be part of a clinical training program. The postdoctoral research fellow works under the supervision of an SDSU faculty member.   


    This NSF-funded project seeks to understand how introgressive hybridization (IH) has impacted phylogeny (deep and shallow) and character evolution in Habronattus jumping spiders, and how IH itself reflects <> affects mating system evolution.


    A postdoctoral research position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Marshal Hedin to conduct population genomic and phylogenomic studies of introgressive hybridization in a species-rich clade of jumping spiders. Three years of support are potentially available, with an opportunity to spend Y3 in the lab of Dr. Wayne Maddison at the University of British Columbia ( The Hedin lab postdoc will also be expected to interact closely with a collaborative team of behavioral biologists at UC Berkeley, in the Elias lab (


    Habronattus represents a diverse and intriguing system where prezygotic isolation via female mate choice appears to be a primary isolating mechanism, facilitated by high visual acuity and complex, multimodal courtship ornaments and behaviors. However, instead of paradigmatic “strong sexual selection acting to isolate”, female preferences in Habronattus appear “open”, to greater or lesser degrees across species and over time (ancient to contemporary). A clear consequence is the sharing of both genes and phenotypes across divergent populations and species. In driving the evolution of additional genetic and phenotypic novelty, this IH potentially fuels a creative feedback loop involving mate choice evolution, phenotypic evolution, and species diversification.


    The Postdoctoral Research Fellow is potentially responsible for but not limited to:


    • Field collections, including multiple collecting expeditions in the US and Mexico.
    • NGS data collection – including genus-wide phylogenomic studies, population genomics experiments, RNASeq and/or genomic analysis of hybrids and hybrid zones.
    • Modern, comprehensive bioinformatic analysis of various NGS data. 
    • Studies of phenotypic evolution, including potential development of new hemiplasy analyses (Y3, in Maddison @ UBC).
    • Preparation (as lead) of journal manuscripts and conference presentations.
    • Attending seminars, colloquia, and other regularly scheduled educational activities at SDSU.
    • Active mentorship of undergraduate and graduate students.
    • Participation in, and potential new development of, community outreach projects.



    • A doctoral degree (PH.D) in Biological Sciences, Entomology, Computer Sciences, or a related field


    • Demonstrated experience in fieldwork
    • Expertise in collection of next generation sequence data (e.g., RNASeq, sequence capture, RADSEq, genomics)
    • Expertise in bioinformatic analysis of next generation sequence data
    • Deep understanding of evolutionary theory, emphasis on introgression dynamics, hybridization
    • Knowledge of arthropod biology
    • Some ability to communicate in Spanish
