  • Overview

    The Family Resource Center social worker (MSW) coordinates family services through the school’s social work program. The candidate will actively provide case management, performing referral, intake procedures, and facilitate support groups for students and families.  In the community, the candidate will participate in community groups, ensure services are effective, and maintain a positive relationship with community agencies and referral institutions.

    Responsibilities

    • Provide long-term case management services for students and families.
    • Provide individual and family counseling.
    • Provide referrals to resources for students and families.
    • Provide crisis intervention.
    • Develop relationships between home and school, and with health and social service programs.
    • Create a welcoming and joining climate for all multi-ethnic and linguistic parents
    • Serve as a field instructor with SDSU’s and USC’s Schools of Social Work as well as other University internship programs.
    • Collaborate with existing school counseling programs and other agencies that provide counseling to students and families.
    • Facilitate support groups on topics such as self-esteem groups, social skills, bullying, etc.
    • Monitoring quality and timeliness of program documentation, providing input to program management on programmatic issues.
    • Collaborate with other social workers and counselors at the secondary level.
    • Liaison between staff and parents, also serving on Problem Solving Team, Attendance Action team, and other multidisciplinary teams.
    • Assist in implementing a yearly needs assessment.
    • Responsible for data collection, evaluation, measurement of outcomes of social work programs and services.
    • Advocate and inform parents of their rights, school, and state policies.
    • Coordinate community agency resources on school site.
    • Assist parents to access and sustain community resources and services.
    • Maintain positive relationships with school and community agencies.
    • Attend monthly social work meetings.

    Qualifications

    Knowledge & Abilities

    • Knowledge of social casework methods, practices, policies and procedures
    • Knowledge of social service community resources and community organizations
    • Ability to exercise tact, objectivity, sensitivity, strategy and judgment in dealing with a variety of people in a variety of situations
    • Ability to develop benefits assistance, referral and service plans
    • Ability to establich workload priorities and manage multiple caseloads
    • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
    • Establish effective working relationships with management, staff and the public representing diverse cultures and backgrounds
    • Exercise appropriate judgment in answering questions and releasing information
    • Maintain current and accurate documentation
    • Working knowledge of standard computer software programs

    Experience/Education

    • 3 or more years of professional social work experience
    • Master's Degree, preferably social work, public health, counseling or education

    Preferred Qualifications and Special Skills

    • 2 years’ experience with community agencies for student and parent support and systems approaches.
    • Collaborative approaches to support services with schools and community agencies
    • Data collection and evaluation
