  • Overview

    The Director for Research Development shall serve under the guidance of the Associate Executive Director, Research Advancement of the San Diego State University (SDSU) Research Foundation and shall identify, develop, and promote special programs and initiatives to meet the research and outreach goals and objectives of SDSU. The Director will advise faculty and researchers on funding opportunities and strategic planning for extramural research proposals. The main focus of efforts are 1) single investigator proposals, 2) major large scale, multidisciplinary and/or multi-investigator research projects, and 3) training, institutional program development, and outreach proposals. The Director will serve as a strategic funding advisor and proposal reviewer for faculty in developing competitive proposals to grow their research programs.  The Director will work with faculty to facilitate, or in some cases lead, the preparation of successful major grant applications, including the coordination of large multi-investigator, multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional research proposals. The director will develop workshops to support proposal development, and understands how campus priorities and information needs fit into the larger national education, research, and funding contexts in order to provide advice to faculty and researchers. The Director will work closely with other University and Research Foundation staff to advance and maintain SDSU’s position and reputation as a national leader in research and scholarship. In addition, the Director will manage, where appropriate, large multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional projects resulting from Research Advancement activities.

    Responsibilities

    The Director is responsible for but not limited to:

     

    Research Outreach Goals and Initiatives 60%
    The Director for Research Development will be responsible for supporting a portfolio of departments, centers, and institutes within a broad but coherent area of research to address national and regional needs and priorities. Assist faculty in generating effective extramural proposals; provide detailed grant proposal development assistance through all stages of proposal conceptual development and refinement; identify key funding opportunities that align with targeted areas of San Diego State University; design, and conduct grant development workshops and other interventions with faculty researchers; facilitate teaming and prepare large-scale competitive proposals in response to selected opportunities; network with various funding programs, federal funding agencies, government and industry officials, and private funders; assist faculty in developing partnerships with other academic, private sector, and government agencies.


    Project Management 25%
    Responsible for identifying, compete for, and secure funding for projects appropriate to the Director’s relevant area of expertise. Lead the SDSU project office for large-multidisciplinary, multi-institutional awards resulting from his/her research development activities. Oversee and administer all aspects of such funded programs and coordinate joint activities with other campus units as and if required; establish and maintain relationships with key federal program officers, agency staff, clients and key industry representatives; coordinate program activities with established program goals, objectives and program requirements; develop and initiate program enhancements including integration of new services and securing new funding sources; serve as the principal point of contact for program to communicate project goals, objectives, and accomplishments to current and potential sponsors, clients, customers, and partners; prepare and deliver reports and briefs to university and sponsor officials as may be required to include lessons learned, performance metrics, problems and solutions, and other relevant program information; coordinate preparation and monitor performance of cost/budget proposals and performance reports to ensure compliance with applicable grant/contract provisions and attainment of established objectives.


    Other Duties and Responsibilities as Assigned 15%
    • Conduct training and outreach programs for junior faculty to enhance their abilities to successfully compete for sponsored research funding
    • Develop and manage the division’s local legislative staff faculty advisory program
    • Support the Graduate Research Fellowship Program
    • Act as a junior academic and research colleague within the relevant college and department at SDSU
    • Design and manage the division’s Rejected Proposal Review and Resubmit program
    • Manage research and institutional funding opportunities related to SDSU’s Hispanic-Serving Institution status

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications/Education:

    • Bachelor’s degree plus 8-years of related experience

     

    Preferred Experience/Education:

    • Ph.D in related field
    • Experience with proposal writing
