  • Overview

This Statement of Work covers the need for the services of a college student to provide technical and/or analytical support in the field of environmental and general microbiology for biological sensor test and evaluation research at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center, Pacific (SSC PAC). This work shall require use of both standardized and innovative laboratory-based test and evaluation procedures. The work shall be conducted in various chemical/biologic laboratories at SSC PAC. The purpose of this task is to explore the impact of chemical, biological, and physical perturbations on marine bacteria in natural environments.

SSC PAC is involved in a variety of research projects to ultimately support the U.S warfighter. One particular area of interest is sensing and monitoring within marine environments. Being able to sense hazards within the marine or aquatic environments allows personnel to assess risks and respond appropriately. Conventional sensor devices have specifically designed recognition elements in order to target particular analytes or properties of interest, and require significant design, development, and testing. A sensor based on the biological responses of bacterial organisms to their local environment may overcome the limitations of conventional sensors and allow for multimodal responses to a suite of environmental factors using recognition elements or biological pathways that are already inherent to these organisms.

    Responsibilities

The contractor shall be involved in the preparation of environmental and biological samples, characterization of these samples, data analysis, and general laboratory maintenance. The contractor shall also participate in planning meetings and conference calls with project collaborators. No human or animal testing is expected with this effort.

    • Conducting standardized and experimental sample characterization testing using standardized
    • Assisting with the preparation of environmental and biological samples.
    • Sampling characterization using optical measurements, electrochemical measurements, and biochemical

    • Performing data analysis of characterization data using Microsoft Excel, image analysis and software processing (Bio-Applications, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator), and other statistical
    • Maintaining laboratory facilities (i.e. washing glassware) and test organisms/cultures.
    • Conducting relevant literature searches pertaining to the studies and participating in report

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:

Undergraduate Level 3 (senior level) majoring in Biology and Environmental or General Required course work: microbiology, chemistry, molecular biology.

    Additional Qualifications:

    • Experience with modern and classical approaches for cultivation of different groups of
    • Experience with analytical tools including High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), Gas Chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS), Raman spectroscopy, quantitative polymerase chain reaction (QPCR), Cloning and transfection, flow
