Matt, PhD and Thomas Novotny, MD, is an extramurally-funded Center established in 2022. CTE’s mission is to prevent, reduce, and eliminate tobacco’s toxic legacy of environmental pollution and harm to human health caused by decades of commercial tobacco sales and use through the creation of an open, community-engaged, inter- and transdisciplinary research center that serves the diverse communities affected by the environmental impacts of commercial tobacco sales and use. CTE provides an organizational platform for the next generation of research that seeks solutions to human exposure and environmental contamination created by decades of tobacco use and that contributes to California’s comprehensive policy initiatives to end commercial tobacco sales and use by 2035.   CTE is home to a well-established group of multi-disciplinary scholars from different colleges at SDSU including Health and Human Services, Sciences, Arts & Letters, and Professional Studies & Fine Arts whose work focuses on the environmental impacts of commercial tobacco use.  Researchers at CTE conduct multiple extramurally-funded research projects focused on tobacco and the indoor and outdoor environment, including the newly-funded Tobacco Policy Research Center (TPRC) for Tobacco and the Environment. Funded by the Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program, the TPRC will pursue the following policy initiatives over the next two years: (1) Make all outdoor dining areas in the City of San Diego smokefree and vapefree; (2) Eliminate tobacco product waste in tribal outdoor recreational areas; (3) Protect aquatic environments from urban tobacco product waste; (4) Disclose thirdhand smoke pollution in real estate transactions; (5) Disclose thirdhand smoke pollution in lease agreements; and (6) Adopt restorative practices focused on tobacco’s environmental impact as part of alternatives to suspension in schools. Please note that due to the potential for the contamination of study samples, the incumbent must be a nonsmoker and non-user of tobacco, e-cigarettes, and cannabis and live with nonsmokers/non-users.

During the non-residential component of the academy, the Residential Advisor/Instructional Aide will support the students either online or in the classroom for their academic needs and social/emotional needs. During virtual and commuter time, the Residential Advisor/Instructional Aide will get to know the students, connect students to their application information and their needs for both health and mental well-being. The salary range for this position is $42.00 - $44.00 per hour depending upon qualifications and is non-negotiable.   The South Bay Latino Research Center (SBLRC) seeks to promote and expedite research that improves cardiovascular disease outcomes in low-income Hispanic/Latinos living in the border region of San Diego. The SBLRC is considered the community-based clinical research field site within San Diego State University (SDSU) where research activities are conducted.   The SBLRC primarily focuses on epidemiologic, behavioral, and genetic research to improve the care being delivered to Hispanic/Latinos at risk for having cardiovascular disease (CVD).    Housed within the SBLRC, the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL) is a multi-center, interdisciplinary epidemiological study of Hispanic/Latino populations in the United States sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and other institutions, centers, and offices of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). The goals of the HCHS/SOL study include further exploration of the prevalence and development of chronic diseases in Hispanics/Latinos, the role of acculturation in health conditions, and to identify factors that play protective or harmful roles in health among Hispanics/Latinos. This longitudinal cohort study is intended to address a wide variety of health conditions, including heart disease, stroke, asthma, chronic obstructive lung disease, and diabetes, among others. The target population recruited from the South Bay area of San Diego County includes over 4,000 persons of Hispanic/Latino origin between the ages of 18-74.

One of the Center's goals is to advance the careers of junior investigators (i.e., under-represented post-doctoral fellows and early-stage investigators) to become leaders in minority health and health disparities research. The salary range for this position is $22.00 - $25.00 per hour depending upon qualifications and is non-negotiable. FUNCTION OF THE UNIT SDSU is leading a new project funded by a UC Climate Action grant in support of a collaborative partnership to advance community and ecosystem resilience to climate change through Indigenous stewardship. Our project, the Collaborative of Native Nations for Climate Transformation and Stewardship (CNNCTS) brings together four universities, six Tribal partners, and the Climate Science Alliance’s Tribal Working Group, a network of representatives from 20+ Tribal governments and organizations in southern California to facilitate a paradigm shift in how climate action is visioned, led, and implemented. Our collaborative model embodies equal valuation of Indigenous and academic knowledge, advances Indigenous management practices and stewardship, and innovates shared learning opportunities for university students and community members.    The objectives of CNNCTS are to: - Advance Science-informed Climate Action;  - Translate Knowledges to Practice;  - Put Adaptation into Action;  - Expand Landscape Stewardship Pathways; and - Promote Social Entrepreneurship.   CNNCTS will deliver high-impact, interdisciplinary curricula and research opportunities to Tribal members and CSU/UC students and faculty, providing real-world technical and workforce training. We will co-produce actionable research on relevant climate adaptation strategies and strengthen relationships between academic and Tribal communities through place-based experiences that will advance community-led climate action.     PURPOSE OF THE POSITION The Project Manager will lead and oversee the day to day project operations and logistics of CNNCTS. The candidate will direct a wide range of initiatives in a fast-paced environment, with attention to detail, accuracy and effective timeline management. You will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and implementing both internal events such as off-site activities, team-building activities and organization-wide meetings, as well as external events for our community partners. You will also play an important role in managing administrative tasks for the project.
