The SDSU Pre-College Institute within the SDSU Research Foundation is seeking Resident Advisors to supervise and advise high school students during our summer residential programs. The Institute’s goal is to assist low-income and/or first-generation college students currently in high school to prepare for success in college. The six-week summer residential programs provide participants with fast-paced, intensive academic coursework and other cultural enrichment activities within a residential setting. Each Resident Advisor is assigned 10-12 students and lives in the dormitory; Resident Advisors receive room and board.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Contribute and work toward building collective and harmonious working relationships among Resident Advisor, Head Resident Advisors, Academic Coordinator, Teaching Staff, Program Director and the students.
  • Male RA’s will oversee male students and female RA’s will oversee females for gender-based or physical complaints/problems.
  • Assess students’ academic, emotional and social needs. Counsel with students on a daily basis regarding academic progress, daily class assignments/activities and emotional/physical wellbeing.
  • Review files of assigned students as needed.
  • Attend pre-program staff trainings and daily and weekly staff meetings
  • Participate and assist in the planning, coordination and implementation of all social, cultural and recreational events
  • Collaborate with the IAs to assist students with completion of daily classroom assignments, projects, and homework during supervised study sessions.
  • Under the direction of the HRA, supervise and assist small-group study sessions during the evening, maintaining a conducive study atmosphere and tutoring students in academic courses as appropriate.
  • Report to HRA regarding problems, functions and disciplinary measures during program activities and field experiences.
  • Provide academic and personal guidance to assigned students
  • Maintain student discipline and enforce all program rules and regulations
  • Supervise students at all times to assure their safety and well-being
  • Monitor students at mealtime for SFSP requirements and maintain data logs
  • Be on call 24-hours a day
  • Maintain sufficient communication with program staff and students to ensure efficient program operation. Report any problems relating to staff or students to the HRA or administrative staff.
  • Report immediately to the HRA in the event of serious student misbehavior or any extreme situation.




  • childcare experience preferred
  • fingerprinting if working with minors
  • education in childhood education/development may be preferred

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Valid California Driver's License
  • Completed at least two years of college
  • Experience with students from underserved populations
  • Experience with TRiO or other outreach programs

A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with SDSU Research Foundation
