Positions in the Research Specialist Classifications are concerned primarily with the compilation and interpretation of both qualitative information and statistical data in the investigation of problems in specific subject matter fields.  Under immediate supervision, the incumbent gathers, compiles and analyzes research data; develops tabulation and coding procedures; and does related work as required. Position will carry out and oversee the performance of small animal cardiology research in an academic research setting.




Research: 100%

  • Carry out small animal experiments in an academic biomedical research environment as directed by supervisor
  • Perform aseptic survival and non-survival microsurgical procedures in small animals
  • Assist in gathering, compiling and analyzing experimental data and prepare reports on the findings
  • Preparation of cell culture of cell lines, as well as preparation of primary cell cultures
  • Preparation of SDS-PAGE and immunoblotting
  • Preparation of immunoprecipitation
  • Preparation of phase contrast and immunofluorescence microscopy and confocal microscopy
  • Small animal (mouse) handling for breeding and experiment purposes
  • Assist in maintaining up-to-date animal protocols for IACUC approval


Knowledge & Abilities 

  • Knowledge of research techniques and the methods of preparation of research reports
  • Ability to gather and analyze research data, and in compiling data for reports and summaries
  • Ability to analyze situations accurately and to adopt an effective course of action
  • Knowledge and ability to conduct experiments with small animals in a cardiovascular research setting

Minimum Education

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a relevant field such as biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, or pharmacology

Minimum Experience

  • One-year of experience in technical research or statistical work; one year of graduate study in the social sciences or an appropriate field may be substituted for the required experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • BS degree in a relevant field, such as biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, pharmacology
  • Previous experience in biomedical research lab preferred but not required
