Overview

The SDSU Research Foundation WIC Program is the largest WIC agency in San Diego County, with approximately 80 employees providing a variety of nutrition services to over 34,000 participants monthly.

 

Under the direction of the WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Supervisor, the WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor will provide basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers, helping them overcome barriers and get a good start with breastfeeding. They may be available outside of usual working hours to mothers who are having breastfeeding problems. PC staff work together with other WIC employees in their efforts to improve breastfeeding rates in the target community.

Responsibilities

The WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor is responsible for but not limited to:

 

Breastfeeding Counseling and Education 95% 

  • Counseling pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by phone at specified intervals
  • Counseling her caseload of participants when they are in the office
  • Referring to the lactation specialist for breastfeeding issues outside her scope of practice
  • Keeping accurate records of all contacts made using the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Database

Other Duties and Responsibilities as Assigned 5%

  • Attending WIC staff meetings and breastfeeding trainings as appropriate
  • Attending breastfeeding training classes to become a peer counselor
  • Comply with state and local agency breastfeeding policies and competencies

Qualifications

  • Has breastfed at least one baby

 Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bilingual English/Spanish or Arabic depending on location
  • Familiar with the Vista community

A background check (including a criminal records check and Livescan-fingerprint) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with SDSU Research Foundation.
