WHAT OUR DEPARTMENT DOES

The Information Systems team serves the evolving information services and technology needs of SDSURF. The team is responsible for the operation, maintenance, security, and ongoing development of SDSURF enterprise systems and providing administrative desktop services for central staff personnel. Our team members work closely with our users and colleagues to develop and implement user-focused technology solutions that support researchers and employees, contributing to increased productivity, security and accessibility of information.

 

The Development Team is responsible for design, programming and high-level support activities of enterprise applications including reporting and analytics, MyRF Oracle Application Express programming, integrations between Banner and other enterprise applications and external third-party systems, and Banner enhancements.  In collaboration with the Enterprise Information Systems Team and department colleagues across the organization, the team’s efforts are key to designing and implementing modern, user-centric processes and reporting assets supporting data-informed decision-making in support of Research Foundation and SDSU strategic priorities. 

Responsibilities

YOUR ROLE IN CREATING THE UNIVERSITY’S PRESENT AND FUTURE

As an IS Analyst/Programmer you will support, improve and modernize administrative systems that support the research and creative endeavors of our staff and faculty. Responsible for an entire range of activities supporting Ellucian Banner ERP implementation (Finance, HR) from troubleshooting, break/fix support, gathering and analyzing requirements to full application development and data integrations with a myriad of external systems and business applications.  Consulting with colleagues across the organization, develop custom forms, reports, workflows, and data integrations supporting business processes using a variety of technical skills, namely Oracle SQL, PL/SQL, Linux shell scripting, Oracle Application Express (APEX), vendor APIs and other data-transfer methods.

 

This position, on occasion, may be required to occasionally work hours beyond typical business hours, including after work hours, weekends, and holidays. 

 

THE WORK YOU WILL DO AND MANAGE

  • Collect functional and technical requirements from users, stakeholders, technical resources, and subject experts to design, prototype, test, debug and deploy secure user-centric programs, custom applications and reports in Banner, APEX and other SDSURF Systems.
  • Provide courteous and effective end-user support for SDSURF enterprise systems.
  • Investigate and evaluate proposed new software, solutions, and approaches to solve ongoing data challenges.
  • Provide various departments with necessary data for internal and external reporting
  • Actively collaborate and coordinate with colleagues to build and share a set of centralized, certified tables and packages from defined business rules to create accurate, consistent reports and programs.
  • Document code and processes and adhere to agreed-upon change management processes for source code, database objects, host programs and directories (including changes to server programs and permissions).
  • Maintain system, program, and user documentation.
  • Conduct all activities in compliance with current SDSU Information Security Plan and SDSU Research Foundation Information Systems Policies and Procedures.

Qualifications

THE SKILLS WE NEED

  • Oracle SQL/PL-SQL programming experience
  • Ability to gather requirements from a diverse sources, perform data analysis, coding, testing, integration and maintenance of Oracle and other business applications.
  • Strong customer service skills and strong desire to assist others
  • Ability to communicate effectively to instruct or train others through explanation and/or demonstration
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences. Self-motivated, ability to stay on task and work both independently and in team environment
  • Highly motivated self-starter, with a strong and dependable work ethic and desire to be a system owner.
  • Well organized, ability to manage priorities and workload to meet deadlines, detail oriented; possess good judgment and common sense.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle direct customer interaction professionally
  • Ability to quickly and honestly recognize and report mistakes to mitigate their impact on systems and users.
  • excellent team-working, training skills and a willingness to share knowledge with other team members along with a willingness to learn from other subject experts in order to raise the collective knowledge of our information systems family
  • Ability to write, tune and validate advanced Oracle SQL queries and reports.
  • Ability to create, test and debug Linux shell scripts, scheduled jobs and automated reports.
  • Knowledge of Linux operating system, including Bash shell, user/group permissions and environment variables.
  • Ability to develop complex Oracle applications, data processes and integration with various systems.
  • Strong understanding of the software development lifecycle from technical design, unit testing to user testing, to production migration. Emphasize adherence to standards and controls, and conduct quality assurance over programs before migration to production. 

 

Experience and Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, business or related field or an equivalent combination of education, certifications and relevant experience.
  • Two-years of related work experience of system design, analysis, programming experience

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two-years of related work experience using SQL in a relational database environment, preferably Oracle SQL and PL/SQL
  • Experience consulting with end-users and stakeholders to analyze business processes, understand business requirements, and develop technical specifications. 
  • Experience with Oracle Application Express (APEX) and/or Ellucian Banner systems a plus
  • Experience with APIs, Web Services or other data integration methods.
  • Experience with Oracle database design with strong knowledge of Oracle database concepts (including stored procedures, packages, functions, triggers, tables, views, indexes, etc.)
  • Experience with Linux/Unix Shell Scripting
  • Proficiency writing advanced queries, using advanced SQL concepts
  • Experience with TOAD, SQL Developer, GIT and GitHub
  • Working knowledge of relational databases (Oracle preferred)
  • Experience with Linux operating system
