KPBS serves the greater San Diego community with informative, cultural, entertaining and educational television, radio, and web programming.  KPBS TV/FM is the public television and radio station for San Diego.  Licensed to San Diego State University, KPBS supports and furthers the university’s educational and community service mission by informing, enlightening and empowering its audience.  It does so not only by presenting national and locally produced programming of value to its San Diego audience, but also by producing programming about San Diego and its people for distribution nationwide.

The KPBS News Web Producer executes digital strategy under the supervision of the Digital Editor. Responsible for creating and enhancing  daily content in support of our news coverage, this position produces content for multiple digital distribution platforms that deepen our connection with the communities we serve now, as well as emerging audiences. The News Web Producer stays up-to-date on news and current events, particularly in San Diego. They may be assigned to appear as a guest or host on a KPBS program in any of its three products: TV, Radio and Digital.

This position is part of the SAG-AFTRA bargaining unit with KPBS.

Responsibilities

The Web Producer is responsible for but not limited to: 

 

Production (60%)

  • Work closely with a team of web producers to create and enhance daily content in support of our news coverage 
  • Produce data visualizations on tools, such as Flourish
  • Produce videos for distribution across digital platforms (i.e., Youtube, Instagram and TikTok)
  • Review and copy edit reporters' online news stories, in coordination with News Editors 
  • Cover general and breaking news stories on KPBS.org and its distribution platforms efficiently and accurately 
  • Provide training and ongoing assistance on online tools for reporters and producers.
  • Pitch and complete original digital stories/projects
  • Regularly fill in for another producer position

Engagement (20%)

  • Work with News and other departments to break, develop, and elevate stories that matter to the community 
  • Update social media sites on a regular basis using online resources and apps to deepen coverage of local news  stories 
  • Develop a regular community of listeners/viewers/users and identify new opportunities for engagement with KPBS'  digital audience 
  • Cultivate sources, identify important trends in local news, and collect and verify information through a variety of  online/offline channels

Project Management (10%)

  • Lead, develop and produce special coverage and projects that increase our reach, boost community engagement and support KPBS’s overall mission 
  • Build online sections and features incorporating research, writing, editing, layout, multimedia and other interactive  features. 
  • Lead mission critical projects under the direction of the Digital Editor

Strategy (5%)

  • Stay up-to-date on news and current events, particularly in San Diego; regularly check wire services and  local news sources for developing stories around Southern California, with a focus on the San Diego and Imperial  Valley region. 
  • Stay up-to-date on emerging and current technologies; meet with the KPBS Digital team on a regular basis  to learn about and provide feedback on the suite of online tools available to the KPBS News team. 
  • Track and take action on project and product analytics

Other Duties as Assigned (5%)

  • Participate in station on-air fundraising activities
  • Make appearances for KPBS community building events and other or related activities or filling in when needed
  • Additional duties may be assigned at the discretion of the supervisor.

Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities  

  • Demonstrated excellence in news judgment; ability to swiftly and accurately report breaking news on all platforms. 
  • Strong organizational and time management skills; reliably meets deadlines. 
  • Ability to successfully engage audiences via social media. 
  • Proven ability to consistently work well with editors and station colleagues, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at KPBS and within the public broadcasting system. 
  • Knowledge of, and adherence to, high ethical standards, particularly in relation to online content
  • Demonstrated ability to build data-driven interactive visual content (e.g. charts, maps, etc.) using tools such as  DataWrapper and Flourish.
  • Ability to be a team player with the desire to collaborate with others 
  • Reliable transportation, valid driver's license and proof of insurance required. 
  • Knowledge of journalistic techniques, materials, and equipment used in news production.
  • Knowledge of a full range of production techniques including graphics, television, video editing methods and equipment and/or a basic knowledge of HTML/CSS where relevant for digital-specific news producer positions.
  • Basic computer skills to operate Newsroom Computer Systems such as Inception, and video editing software systems such as Adobe Premiere.
  • Ability to consistently write with AP/Broadcast style, structure and grammar.
  • Ability to write on at least one platform (audio, video, or web) and the willingness to develop an ability on one other or both platforms.
  • Ability and willingness to work varied shifts, and to respond to breaking news as needed.
  • Demonstrated writing and editing skills, including a foundation in English grammar.
  • Ability to perform moderately complex technical work and produce daily news content.
  • Ability to interact/communicate effectively with co-workers and audience members on all relevant news mediums and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to understand and follow posted work rules and procedures

Minimum Education

  • Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent training and work in journalism.

Minimum Experience

  • Two years of progressively responsible or related experience in journalism along with basic news judgment, understanding of journalism ethics and the ability to swiftly and accurately report breaking news on platforms.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Four years of experience working in a newsroom.
  • Experience using Grove (CMS)
  • Experience producing multimedia and/or knowledge of video and photo editing platforms
  • Knowledge of current San Diego and regional issues.
  • Ability to shoot and edit audio and video.
  • Knowledge of digital community engagement strategies and tools such as Hearken.
  • Experience producing data-driven news stories
  • Knowledge of FOIA’s, public records and investigative reporting techniques to break stories.
