The San Diego State University Institute for Transformative Education promotes college access and completion for low-income and/or first-generation-college students through excellence and innovation in education. SDSU Upward Bound (UB) educational programs are funded by the U.S. Department of Education to assist eligible high school students to pursue and complete postsecondary education. There are 13 staff members in the Academic Year and approximately 24 during the Six-Week Summer Academy. UB is funded to serve 167 students (93 UB Classic and 74 UB STAR) during the Academic Year and 60 students (33 UB Classic and 27 UB STAR) during the Six-Week Summer Academy.
The SDSU Institute for Transformative Education supported by the SDSU Research Foundation is seeking Teaching Assistants for our four Summer Academy courses - Healthy Communities, Emergency Preparedness, College Level Statistics, and Youth Impact Assessment. The Institute’s goal is to assist low-income and/or first-generation-college students currently in high school to prepare for success in college. The six-week summer academy is delivered to participants in two phases. Phase 1 is a four week, fast-paced, intensive academic coursework and enrichment activities program. Phase 1 uses a hybrid delivery system consisting of online, commuter days, and residential settings. During Phase 1 the Teaching Assistant will support the instructor in the assigned course in the classroom. Week 1 will be a virtual classroom and Weeks 2-4 will be in-person on the SDSU campus. The Teaching Assistant support duties will include tutoring students, answering questions on the course material, grading assignments, conducting reviews and study halls, and assisting the instructor during group work in the classroom and other duties as assigned. Phase 2 is the last two weeks of the Summer Academy. This Phase is online Mondays through Thursdays and Commuter Day on Fridays. The Teaching Assistant support duties are the same but will include helping to prepare their students for the Summer Academy Research Symposium during Weeks 5-6.

In-Person: Monday, June 16, 2025 - Thursday, July 3, 2025 (Monday-Friday)
Phase 2 Dates: July 7, 2025- July 11, 2025 (Online) * Only for the 2 TA- strong background in assessment and research
Staff Debrief: Thursday, July 3, 2025
Research Symposium: Saturday, July 19, 2025 (Onsite SDSU Campus)
