Overview

The salary range for this position is $6,489 - $7,157.50 per month ($77,868 - $85,890 per year) depending upon qualifications and is non-negotiable.

KPBS serves the greater San Diego community with informative, cultural, entertaining and educational television, radio, and web programming. KPBS TV/FM is the public television and radio stations for San Diego. Licensed to San Diego State University, KPBS supports and furthers the university’s educational and community service mission by informing, enlightening and empowering its listeners. It does so not only by presenting national and locally produced programming of value to its San Diego audience, but also by producing programming about San Diego and its people for distribution nationwide.

The KPBS Communications Department is responsible for the strategic coordination of information to staff, the public and press about KPBS content, employees, station outreach, events and activities.

 

This position is covered under the SAG-AFTRA collective bargaining agreement with KPBS.

Responsibilities

Working alongside the Social Media Manager, the strategist will focus on day-to-day content creation and distribution

across KPBS social channels. The strategist collaborates on developing social media strategies and meeting station goals for audience growth, content promotion, and fundraising while maintaining brand consistency across all social platforms.

In addition to managing social media postings, the Social Media Strategist is responsible for collaborating with the Social Social Media Manager to plan and implement an editorial calendar and evaluate new social platforms.

 

Social Media (95%)

  • With the Social Media Manager and Director of Communications, build and execute social media strategy using research, platform determination, benchmarking, messaging and audience identification.
  • Generate, edit, publish and share daily content that builds meaningful connections and encourages community members to take action.
  • Collaborate with Social Media Manager on evaluating current and new social media platforms. Determine which are worth an investment of time, and which are not.
  • Collaborate with Social Media Manager on the creation of an editorial calendar and ensure its successful implementation.
  • Expected to represent KPBS on camera on social media platforms.
  • Continuously improve KPBS' social media presence by capturing and analyzing the appropriate social data/metrics, insights and best practices, and then acting on the information.
  • Work with reporters in the newsroom to produce social content around their reporting.
  • Collaborate with the Social Media Manager to pilot new digital projects, measuring their success and incorporating findings into the overall social media strategy under the direction of the Social Media Manager and Director of Communications

 

Other Duties & Responsibilities as Assigned (5%)

Collaborate with other departments to meet station and department goals, manage reputation, and coordinate actions.

 

Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities

  • Working knowledge of Web production, video editing and video production. 
  • Understanding of social media culture; ability to differentiate between emerging best practice, passing fad, and calcifying conventional wisdom.
  • Demonstrated ability to write in a conversational voice while still maintaining brand integrity.
  • Ability to voice or be on camera for social media videos.
  • Demonstrated audio and/or video editing skills. 
  • Ability to shoot/record/edit audio/video for social media platforms.
  • Ability to, or willingness to learn how to do social media stand-ups/live shots.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to new technologies.
  • Ability to investigate and verify claims on social media.
  • Strong communicator with proven ability to create a transparent environment.
  • Ability to build and maintain working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and students.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with others.
  • Excellent writing and proofreading skills.
  • Knowledge of mainstream and emerging social media platforms and their community norms.
  • Knowledge of web design, web development and SEO.
  • Ability to work in an often-stressful and fluid environment, and under the constraints of a tight budget and absolute deadlines.
  • The ability to follow direction and be guided by the KPBS strategic plan.
  • Ability to display strong diplomatic/negotiation skills.
  • Ability to work occasional nights and weekends, when necessary.
  • Knowledge of online marketing and good understanding of major marketing channels.
  • Customer-service oriented with the ability to multitask and stay organized.

Minimum Experience

  • Three years of social media experience for a business (nonprofit or commercial).
  • Experience building an audience through social networks (I.E. Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Reddit and beyond).
  • Experience using social analytics to determine social return on investment (ROI).
  • Working knowledge of Web production.

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor's degree, with major work in English, journalism, arts, humanities or related field, or equivalent work experience.

Preferred Qualifications and Special Skills

  • Five years of social media experience.
  • Experience building an audience through brand (non-personal) accounts.
  • Social media experience for a news organization.
  • Knowledge and understanding of public media.
  • Basic news judgment and an understanding of journalism ethics.
