Overview

This position is budgeted for $29.28 per hour and is non-negotiable. 

 

This position is open until filled with an initial application review to take place after two weeks.

 

The School of Nursing is part of the SDSU College of Health and Human Services. It is one of five schools, the School of Nursing, the Graduate School of Public Health, the School of Social Work, the School of Exercise and Nutrition, and the School of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences.

 

The School of Nursing has both undergraduate and graduate degree programs, and trains future nurses in conjunction with a wide variety of community health care agencies who provide student placement for educational experiences and training purposes.

 

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

Under the direction of the Director, School of Nursing and the College of Health and Human Services Assistant Dean for Student Affairs, the incumbent will provide high quality, accessible and consistent advising services to High School students interested in pursuing a degree in nursing.  The incumbent will advise and support students in the college application process, the financial aid application process and financial aid availability.  He or she will work with students to complete financial aid forms (including the FAFSA) as well as college applications.  The incumbent will meet with 9th - 12th grade students to monitor coursework for A-G requirements, discuss and support college application process, and engage in goal setting and planning for college admissions.

 

The person holding this position is considered a “Mandated Reporter” under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in the CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

Financial Advising 45%

  • Provide advice and counsel about available financial aid opportunities, eligibility requirements, the application process and college resources to students and parents in-person, over the phone and via email.
  • Carefully adhere to all institutional, state and federal guideline and regulations, including FERPA.
  • Follow proper office procedures and processes to address student inquiries while thoroughly documenting, both electronically and manually, details for each file.
  • Assess unusual circumstances, review and analyze incomplete or conflicting data to appropriately communicate information to students and families related to financial aid.
  • Verify that information provided on various financial aid forms and legal documents is accurate, current and consistent with applicable supporting documentation.

Student Advisement 45%

  • Advise High School students interested in a nursing degree in the areas of college applications, college entry requirements, and college graduation requirements.
  • Communicate effectively with students, other departments, the Director, and other administrator in relation to student needs.
  • Judiciously uphold student confidentiality, FERPA requirements, and university privacy and requirements in all communications.
  • Be proactive in dealing with students, parents, and faculty when concerns arise.

Qualifications

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Experience to be fully functional in all technical aspects of work assignments.
  • Ability to independently handle multiple work unit priorities and projects.
  • Ability to apply independently a wide variety of policies and procedures where specific guidelines may not exist.
  • Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures independently and use judgment and discretion to act when precedents do not exist.
  • Ability to effectively write and present own reports.
  • Ability to effectively handle interpersonal interactions at all levels and handle highly sensitive interpersonal situations.
  • Knowledge of higher education institutions and the ability to explain procedures to youth, parents, and school representatives. Knowledge of college entrance requirements, especially as it relates to nursing programs. Must be able to accurately and clearly provide students information about college entrance requirements.
  • Ability to read student transcripts and provide accurate feedback on course requirements. Skill in advising high school students to set goals and prioritize.
  • Knowledge of academic programs, including curricula and admissions requirements at higher education institutions.
  • Knowledge of high school graduation and college entrance requirements.
  • Knowledge with completion of financial aid applications.
  • Knowledge working with a diverse student population, and sensitivity to culture, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation and socio-economic status. Experience working with 9th - 12th grade students from diverse, low income backgrounds. Understanding of educational barriers facing low income, first generation high school students.

 

Minimum Education & Experience

  • Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree and/or equivalent training and administrative work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practices or programs.
  • 3-years of progressively responsible experience in an office or administrative environment

 

Preferred Qualifications & Special Skills:

  • Imperial County resident
  • Master’s Degree in a related field
  • Experience within the healthcare field
  • Familiar with CSU and SDSU general education and graduation requirements.
  • Experience in business administration, attendance at a community college and/or university, working knowledge of the K-12 system in Imperial County, experience with high school students.
  • Possession of the required knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of two years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas or in a related field; experience should give evidence of competence and indicate the potential for further growth.  A master’s degree in a job-related field may be substituted for one year of the professional experience.
