Overview

This position is budgeted at $21.95 per hour and is non-negotiable.

 

This Statement of Work covers the need for student services to fabricate 2D and quantum material heterostructure twistronic-based samples and to optically characterize their properties in a cryogenic probe station or optical cryostat using photoluminescence (PL) techniques. The student will assist in setting up a recirculating gas cooled optical cryostat with high resolution spectrometer to measure the cryogenic photoluminescence (PL) from the fabricated samples. The student will also perform time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) measurements and second-order autocorrelation g2(-r) measurements on the fabricated samples. The work will be performed in the Quantum Engineered Nano Devices Laboratory (QENDL) at NIWC Pacific.

 

The Quantum Engineered Nano Devices Laboratory (QENDL) at NIWC Pacific investigates the properties of two­ dimensional (2D) lattice materials to develop novel electronic and optoelectronic devices. The manipulation of single atomic layers such as graphene allow for the synthesis of devices with engineered electronic band structures that are not present in conventional semiconductors. The QENDL lab uses state-of-the-art cryogenic probe station and spectroscopy equipment to develop, characterize, and evaluate emerging 2D and quantum material heterostructure devices for applications such as quantum information processing, optoelectronic imaging, chemical sensing, and conformable and wearable circuitry.

 

Responsibilities

The student contractor shall provide analytical and technical support in the following areas, as specified under individual task orders, to the work sponsor:


Fabrication and Characterization of 2D and quantum material twistronic samples and/or devices:

 

  • Assist with the design, development, and sustainment of experimental setups in the QENDL lab to optically characterize 2D and quantum material micron-sized flake-based twistronic samples ( e.g. photoluminescence, time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL), Raman spectroscopy, both at cryogenic and room temperature).
  • Assist with the fabrication of 2D and quantum material micron-sized flake-based twistronic and non­twistronic-based samples inside and outside of an inert glove box environment using a motorized 2D material transfer system.
  • Assist with the design, development, and sustainment oflarge area 2D and quantum material samples grown via Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) or equivalent method.
  • Assist with design, development, and sustainment of cryogenic photoluminescence spectroscopy
    (steady-state PL and TRPL) measurements using fiber-optic based vacuum feedthroughs in our cryogenic probe station.
  • Assist with design, development, and sustainment of cryogenic photoluminescence spectroscopy
    (steady-state PL and TRPL) measurements using free-space (objective lens) photoexcitation/photodetection using high resolution spectrometer to resolve linewidth of quantum emitters.
  • Assist with design, development, and sustainment of second order autocorrelation (anti-bunching) g (r) measurements and experiments to confirm single photon nature of quantum emitters in 2D and quantum material samples. 
  • Assist with design, development, and sustainment of data gathering, data analysis, manuscript preparation, patent preparation, and Power Point slide documentation of design of experiments.

Qualifications

Graduate Student 1: Must have a Bachelor's degree in the required discipline and be enrolled in a Master's degree program. Must be able to accomplish a minimum of 50% of the task without supervision.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Physics or Electrical Engineering major preferred.

 

Required Course Work:

  • Phys 357 Advance Measurements Laboratory (or equivalent)
  • Phys 532 Condensed Materials (or equivalent)
  • Phys 406 Optics (or equivalent)
  • Phys 410 Quantum Mechanics (or equivalent)

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Phys 311 Electronics for Scientists Laboratory ( or equivalent)
  • Python, or other software programming experience.
  • Ability to read and implement technical documents or test standards.
  • Comfortable with working independently and in group settings.
  • Flexible with learning new programming languages based on project's needs.
  • Ability to read and implement technical documents or test standards.
  • Independent/self-starter who can operate under minimal oversight.
  • Collaborative/team-player who can work well with groups.

 

Additional Applicant Information

  • This position will require the employee to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance
