Overview

The salary range for this position is $5,700.00 - $6,000.00 per month depending upon qualifications and is non-negotiable. 

 

The SDSU Research Foundation Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program is the largest WIC agency in San Diego County, with approximately 80 employees providing a variety of nutrition services to over 26,000 participants monthly. The WIC program is a safety net program that aims to safeguard the health of low-income women, infants, and children up to age 5 who are at nutrition risk by providing nutritious foods to supplement diets, information on healthy eating, and referrals to health care for residents of San Diego County.

 

Under the direction of the WIC Program Director, the WIC Nutrition Education Coordinator is responsible for developing, coordinating and delivering nutrition education activities to program directors, coordinators, Registered Dietitians Nutritionists (RDNs), Degreed Nutritionists, Nutrition Assistants, breastfeeding coordinators, management staff and clinic support staff.  Responsible for coordinating WIC program policy and procedure implementation.

 

This position is temproarily remote.

Responsibilities

The WIC Nutrition Education Coordinator is responsible for but not limited to:

 

Nutrition Education Development 40%

Develops, implements and evaluates the nutrition education training plan and nutrition education curriculum for WIC participants; oversees the development of the Nutrition Services Plan (NSP), including the annual updates to CDPH/WIC and submission of any needed changes in the nutrition education portion of the NSP.  Coordinates all purchasing of nutrition education materials, communicates with CDPH/WIC for approval on materials, & organizes nutrition education materials. Ensures all sites have needed lesson plans and education supplies to deliver nutrition education. Responsible for awareness of nutrition education materials offered to all WIC participants within the WIC sites.

 

Training 25%

Responsible for providing new hire nutrition education training for Registered Dietitian Nutritionists, Degreed Nutritionists, Nutrition Assistants, and Nutrition Services Assistants. Coordinate with Training Coordinator, Breastfeeding Coordinator and Administrative staff to plan and conduct monthly meetings and mandated trainings.

 

Policy and Procedure Implementation 25%

Reviews communications from CDPH/WIC or WIC Director with the Training Coordinator to create plans for local agency policy implementation. Coordinates with the Training Coordinator on policy writing, policy training, policy monitoring, and communication to staff on needs and roles. Executes implementation plans to completion.

 

Other Duties and Responsibilities as Assigned 10%

Participates in statewide Nutrition Education Committee Meetings and Regional Nutrition Education & Training Consortium Meetings; complies with state and local agency breastfeeding policies and competencies; completes other projects as assigned by a supervisor.

Qualifications

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Knowledge of the WIC program and how to bring awareness to various community based organizations and social services programs to increase participation engagement
  • Knowledge of adult centered learning theories as applied to nutrition and health instructional materials
  • Knowledge of the wide variety of policies and procedures integral to the California WIC program
  • Knowledge of the WIC Program and community nutrition with emphasis on maternal, infant and child needs
  • Knowledge of breast feeding benefits, physiology and procedures
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of nutrition, health promotion and disease prevention
  • Knowledge and competency using word processing applications, spreadsheets and internet applications
  • Knowledge of adult centered learning theories as applied to nutrition and health instructional materials
  • Ability to coordinate outreach activities and represent WIC at county meetings and community events
  • Ability to train staff on various nutrition and social service resources available to WIC families to improve their health.
  • Ability to develop outreach campaigns and materials via print and through social media platforms
  • Ability to deliver training and presentations to groups and individuals
  • Ability to refer community resources and programs to people in need of assistance
  • Ability to interact and communicate clearly and effectively in a professional manner, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality of participant, employee and agency records
  • Ability to work well in a fast paced environment and to work with a multi-cultural staff and participant population
  • Ability to understand and follow posted work rules and procedures
  • Ability to travel throughout San Diego County and work at various WIC Offices and community partner locations
  • Ability to work evenings and occasional weekends
  • Ability to arrive to work on time, understand and follow posted work rules and procedures
  • Ability to relate well to others within the WIC project environment and interact effectively with coworkers
  • Ability to be a highly motivated self-starter with strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to be well organized, meet deadlines, display detail orientation; possess good judgment and common sense
  • Ability to display sensitivity to ethnically and culturally diverse individuals

 

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in health education or related field.
  • Equivalent to two years of progressively responsible health educator experience in WIC, social services or public health program.
  • Credentialed as a registered dietitian (RD) by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).

 

Preferred Qualifications & Special Skills

  • Master’s degree in nutrition or related field
  • Certified Lactation Educator
  • Bilingual English/Spanish
  • Previous WIC Experience
  • Background in exercise science and/or physical activity promotion
