The Structural Engineering research team at SDSU involves several graduate and undergraduate students providing research assistance on assessing the performance of structures under seismic motion.

We are seeking a highly skilled Research Assistant to join our team and contribute to groundbreaking research on Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) and its connections to concrete footings under seismic loading conditions. The Research Assistant will support ongoing research projects involving 3D finite element modelling of CLT mass timber connections to concrete footings. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of CLT material behavior, anchor performance, and finite element analysis. This role requires a deep understanding of structural mechanics and seismic performance, as well as hands-on experience with advanced modelling software.

Responsibilities

Research activities 95%

  • Develop and refine 3D finite element models to simulate the behavior of CLT mass timber connections to concrete footings under seismic loading conditions.
  • Work closely with the research team on the experimental work to integrate findings and refine models based on experimental data and theoretical insights.
  • Prepare detailed reports, research papers, and presentations to communicate findings to stakeholders, including academic peers and industry partners.
  • Mentor younger colleagues and team members on finite element modelling.
