Overview

The salary range for this position is $6,250.00 - $7,000.00 per month and is non-negotiable.

 

The newly-funded San Diego State University/San Diego State University-Imperial Valley Prevention Research Center (PRC) aims to reduce the health effects of extreme heat in Imperial County communities that are most impacted. Organized into administrative, research, and network components, the center will build infrastructure and partnerships to support a research project using implementation science methods with evidence-based interventions to adapt a Heat Action Plan in Imperial County, California.

 

The PRC is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and is part of a national network of academic research centers that study how people and their communities can reduce risks for chronic exposures and illnesses.

 

We are seeking a highly motivated candidate to serve as the PRC Deputy Director. In close collaboration with the PRC Principal Investigator, PRC Research Project Principal Investigator, and additional personnel, the incumbent will be responsible for the overall day-to-day conduct of the multifaceted center, as well support longer-term strategic priorities.

The Deputy Director will be responsible for management and administration of programs, staff, budget development and management, proposal writing, and new program development. They will provide fiscal oversight and make recommendations for resource and funds allocation to ensure smooth execution of the scope of work according to grant and institutional requirements and within budget. They will play a central role in the communication and flow of information between PRC components as well as with partners, coordination of meetings and events, and the production and distribution of internal and external reports.

 

The Deputy Director will also be responsible for recruiting, training, supervising, and evaluating staff, and will provide work direction to a team of research and outreach staff, students, and/or postdoctoral scholars.

 

The PRC is based in Imperial County, CA. This position includes hybrid work and requires significant travel throughout Imperial County. In addition, the position requires infrequent travel to national meetings and conferences in Atlanta, GA, and other locations.

Responsibilities

The Deputy Director is responsible for but not limited to:

 

CENTER COORDINATION AND OVERSIGHT 70%

The Deputy Director will have general supervision and oversight of the Prevention Research Center. The incumbent will ensure the achievement of all milestones, manage timelines and support the team’s activities. As lead administrator, they will develop and maintain budgets, plan and track expenses, procure supplies, coordinate payment to partners, subcontractors, and vendors, as well as coordinate travel, prepare documentation and requests as necessary to implement center activities. They will prepare cost estimates/analyses and reconcile budgets and projections. They will be responsible for the creation and timely submission of all required reports and data to the funders as well as community partners.

 

They will secure space, coordinate hospitality, communicate with meeting and event leaders, venues, and attendees, and confirm that all invoices are paid. They will coordinate, plan and execute project events, including weekly, monthly and quarterly meetings, focus groups, and community gatherings. They will serve as the primary point of contact for communicating and adhering to SDSU, SDSU Research Foundation, and funder policies and procedures.

 

The Deputy Director will be responsible for hiring, onboarding, training, coordinating and evaluating center staff, students, and postdocs. This support includes but is not limited to scheduling, evaluating, coordinating, and conducting training sessions and meetings with staff. The Deputy Director is responsible for creating and monitoring staff adherence to protocols and progress toward goals. They will develop and implement policies that foster a positive and inclusive workplace with well-trained and well-supported team members.

 

The Deputy Director will develop and maintain relationships with the leadership and staff of community and academic partners. As a primary point of contact for the PRC, they will be prepared to explain the center and its priorities, establish rapport, and support community partners in overcoming barriers to effective implementation of the scope of work. They will use sound judgment and cultural humility to maintain productive and professional relationships with diverse stakeholders and organizations.

 

RESEARCH PROJECT COORDINATION 20%

The Deputy Director will monitor progress of deadlines according to project milestones, assure compliance with all federal reporting requirements, complete IRB amendments and reports, and confirm that the study and all components are in compliance.

 

They will work with team members to oversee research and outreach logistics, including data collection, program implementation, etc. They will oversee the quality of incoming data and processes for reporting results to stakeholders, identify potential problems, and follow up on quality issues with field staff.

 

PRC NETWORK COORDINATION 10%

The incumbent will ensure that the PRC is engaging productively with the larger national PRC network. Responsibilities in this area include, but are not limited to, ongoing communication with network partners; planning and implementing conference calls, meetings, working groups, and conferences; developing and sharing best practices and policy recommendations; sharing research findings at national meetings; and building and supporting partnerships within the larger PRC network.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in the appropriate field related to the program/project
    -OR-
  • Equivalent training and relevant work experience involving study, analysis, and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies, procedures, practivces, or programs.
  • Eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in an office or administrative enviornment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree in Public Health, Implementation Science, or related field
  • 2+ years experience in community-partnered research/outreach with knowledge of Imperial Valley partners and stakeholders
  • experience supervising/delegating work and managing grant-funded projects
  • Spanish/English bilingual.
