Overview

  • This position is open until filled with an initial application review to take place after August 8, 2024. 
  • The salary range for this position is $5,546.67 - $6,666.67 per month and is non-negotiable. 
  • The incumbent must reside in California and live a commutable distance from San Diego State University during the time of hire. 

Prison Arts Collective (PAC) works to expand access to the transformative power of the arts through collaboration and mutual learning that supports the development of self-expression, reflection, communication, and empathy through providing multidisciplinary arts programming in correctional institutions. PAC currently facilitates weekly multidisciplinary arts programming in eight prisons throughout California. PAC is based at San Diego State University with affiliations at California State Universities in Humboldt, Sacramento, and San Bernardino. The core PAC team is composed of 6 administrative staff members and 8 to 12 teaching staff members. PAC works in partnership with 15 state correctional institutions to provide programming across the state of California.

Responsibilities

Position Summary

Under the general direction of the Executive Director and PI, the Assistant Director will support the ED in managing programming and organizational operations across all correctional institutions where PAC has programming, take a leadership role in team supervision and program management. The position responsibilities include support with maintaining relationships with correctional partners, program oversight, and ensuring smooth internal operations in alignment with PAC values, including supervising the PAC teaching team, including lead teaching artists, assistants and volunteers.

Key Responsibilities 

 

Team Management (25%)

  • Manage a diverse team of students, staff, interns to implement PAC’s scope of work across multiple grants in alignment with the PAC mission and vision.
  • Provide support and a direct line of communication to the teaching team, including teaching artists, assistants, and volunteers.
  • Work closely with the team to ensure the smooth implementation of all PAC programming.  
  • Host teacher meetings, check-ins, and regular one-on-one meetings with teaching staff.
  • Schedule and host biannual PAC all-team meetings in collaboration with ED.

 

Program Coordination (40%)

  • Ensure clear and transparent scheduling of programming in alignment with scope of work, ensuring teaching artists and their assistants are prepared, trained, and substitutes are in place as needed.
  • Monitor and organize PAC resources and guidelines, including policies for supplies, safety, and participation, and ensure that teacher resources are organized, updated, and disseminated.
  • Be available for staff for questions and brainstorming to support the team in their roles and maintain schedule and records for training and support for staff, interns and volunteers.
  • Prepare reports for quarterly advisory board meetings to share updates in the areas of programming, development, outreach, and staffing. 
  • Build on positive relationships between the PAC team and CDCR staff at each institution and maintain clear and consistent communication about the program.

 

Operations (30%)

  • Work with the ED and communications team to develop and prepare materials for events, collaborations, and meetings in correctional institutions, community, and university and ensure website is updated on a regular basis.
  • Collaborate with Education lead to Integrate peer facilitators into teaching team (support on site and in communications).
  • Serve as a partner to leads at PAC chapter sites to support smooth program operations.
  • Schedule regular orientations and teacher teacher trainings and create a system to track training and ensure all team members are up to date.

Qualifications

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Proven ability to work with efficiency and flexibility.
  • Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Successful experience managing a team and programs across multiple sites.
  • Ability and openness to work collaboratively with diverse partners and populations. 
  • Ability to demonstrate a high level of cross-cultural sensitivity.
  • Success in roles requiring execution of multiple tasks while responding to multiple priorities.
  • Knowledge of communications technology, preference for experience Google suite, Zoom, and basic design tools

 Required Experience & Qualifications

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field (ie, public administration, arts leadership, organizational management, criminology).
  • Four years of experience in operations, team management, coordination or similar role at nonprofit organization, foundation, or government agency with at least one year of significant teaching and/or mentoring experience, preferably in correctional institutions.
  • Assistant Director will be required to successfully complete the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) Background Investigation in order to obtain clearance to visit prisons. Employees required to visit California prisons are expected to submit clearance applications as needed within two weeks of their official start date. The position is dependent on clearance at affiliated CDCR institutions.
  • Candidates must reside in California.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching in the criminal justice system and/or Arts in Corrections strongly preferred.
  • Candidates with lived experience of the criminal justice system will be strongly considered.
