The San Diego State University Institute for Transformative Education promotes college access and completion for under-served students through excellence and innovation in education. SDSU Upward Bound-HCO educational opportunity programs funded by the U.S. Department of Education and the California Medicine Scholars to assist eligible high school students pursue and complete postsecondary programs of education. There are 13 staff members in the Academic Year and approximately 31 during the Six-Week Summer Academy.  UB-HCO is funded to serve 167 students (93 UB Classic and 84 UB STAR) during the Academic Year and 90 students (50 UB Classic and 40 UB STAR) during the Six-Week Summer Academy. The purpose of SDSU Upward Bound is to develop in students the motivation and skills to assist them to pursue and complete a program of postsecondary education. The purpose of California Medicine Scholars is to create pathways for underserved students to become physicians.

The SDSU Institute for Transformative Education supported by the SDSU Research Foundation is seeking Resident Advisors/Instructional Aides to supervise, advise, and support high school students during our summer academy. The Institute’s goal is to assist low-income and/or first-generation college students currently in high school to prepare for success in college. The six-week summer academy provides participants with fast-paced, intensive academic coursework and other cultural enrichment activities within a hybrid delivery system consisting of online, commuter days, and in a residential setting. Each Resident Advisor is assigned 10-12 students and lives in the residence hall for the last two weeks of the program; Resident Advisors receive room and board. During the non-residential component of the academy, the Residential Advisor/Instructional Aide will support the students either online or in the classroom for their academic needs and social/emotional needs. During virtual and commuter time, the Residential Advisor/Instructional Aide will get to know the students, connect students to their application information and their needs for both health and mental well-being. During the residential component of the academy the Residential Advisor will focus on the student’s afternoon activities and offer academic support when needed.
