Under general supervision, incumbents must have course work in the discipline requested on the task order Statement of Work.


This Statement of Work covers the need for student services to provide technical and/or analytical support in the fields of computer science, electrical engineering, information systems, computer engineering etc. (Must be a major listed in basic contract SOW) for the TRAP project. The purpose of this project is to develop a system that will recommend locations to send reconnaissance assets to locate vessels that are not currently being actively tracked by other assets.


The U.S. Navy needs the capability to locate vessels at sea. We are developing software to assist with this task. We need assistance developing a user interface for this software that is easy-to-use and displays a wide variety of data including point objects, regions, probability density maps, altitude and bathymetry contours. The TRAP Project creates a necessary dynamic framework software tool.


The student shall assist the work sponsor in:

  • Continue development of a user interface for the TRAP project utilizing Open Layers framework. Many different types of data will need to be displayed, including point objects, regions, probability density maps, altitude and bathymetry contours, etc. Each of these types of data needs to be displayed on a separate layer, with the capability to display or hide each layer independently. The software tool must be able to dynamically update the data being displayed in accordance with a time signal. The software tool must be able to function on a stand-alone computer. This interface must be developed using good user interface design techniques, and the student will consult with a NIWC Pacific user-centered design subject matter expert.
  • Submitting Monthly Status Reports and Bi-Weekly Time Reports in accordance with basic contract CDRL and task and contract requirements.


The student must be at the Junior or Senior level and have experience in 50% of the task requirements and be able to accomplish 50% of the work independently. Is not required to be an SDSU Student.


  • Undergraduate Level 2: Computer Science major (Junior or Senior)

Required Course Work:

  • Proficiency in JavaScript, Java, and Python


  • Course work in web application development and interface design
  • Knowledge of Open Layers framework


  • The COVID-19 vaccine is required by the CSU for all SDSU Research Foundation employees as a condition of employment.
